Podcastcon UK 2006
I’ve signed up for podcastcon in on November 18. It will be interesting to see if the convention has the same buzz as last year. Somehow I think that the heady “the future belongs to us” feeling of the independents must be gone for ever. A year on, the big media players like Virgin, the BBC, the Guardian and the Telegraph have made the word “podcast” a little more familiar to the public. In doing so, they’ve started to dominate the space, and it’s that much harder for an indie production to get noticed. It’s still not impossible, but harder. The excitement seems to have moved on to YouTube where a similar process is taking place.
But Podcasting still has a lot to offer if you have a natural network. Schools, businesses with regular clients, charities, government agencies – these are the sort of organisations that can use podcasting to good effect. I don’t see much of that reflected in the Podcastcon agenda, but no doubt it will come up in the discussion.
