Feedburner Explains

Feedburner is keeping a keen eye on the bloggers. They replied almost instantly to my report about their stats going loco. Here’s what they are saying on their forum:

It appears that one of the aggregators which regularly polls FeedBurner feeds reported more than 50,000 subscribers in yesterday’s results. One of the ways we determine total subscriptions for a day is by summing the number of subscribers that web-based aggregators report to us when they request a feed. Obviously, when one of these reports is significantly above or below normal, the numbers we report to you will reflect it.

We are contacting this aggregator’s developer about this issue and hope to have it resolved promptly. We are sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience — we know you take your stats seriously, and so do we!

I think that the “aggregator” they are talking about is “netvibes.”

Feedburner is of course both invaluable and largely free, so we shouldn’t complain. It’s just hard not to “have a giggle” when something blows up like this.
