Podcast.com
Just back from the meet-Adam Curry get-together organised by Britcaster at the Bricklayer’s Arms in London.
I met Adam Curry and his crew from Podshow at the entrance to the pub. I was expecting the 1980s MTV presenter to be more of a wrinkly rocker, but he was quite baby-faced, as well as being very lanky. I didn’t chat very much with the “Podfather”. He seemed to be out of circulation for most of the time.
Of course Curry is promoting Podshow, which aims to promote podcasts and win sponsors. I was more intrigued by his rival, Kosso, chief geek for Podcast.com, which will soon launch as yet another podcast directory.
Until recently, Kosso - aka Jon Kossmann - worked for the BBC in the technology department. He was headhunted by Podcast.com whose owners paid a rumoured quarter of a million dollars for the domain name. Kosso was explaining to me how Podcast.com will use OPLM OPML technology. I’m afraid it was a little above my head, but as I understand it, you the user will be able to create your own directory of your favourite podcasts, and you will be able to do it jolly easily. You will even be able to put it on your own blog.
There are so many podcast directories out there, but there isn’t one really good one. As Kosso said, iTunes is great if you use it with an iPod. It just automatically transfers your subscriptions to your portable player. Apart from that, it’s cumbersome and a nuisance. Other directories rank podcasts according to users’ votes - and that’s wide open to abuse. It isn’t easy to find what you are looking for, or to manage your subscriptions. In other words, there is still room for the Google of podcasts to come along. And yes, Podcast.com will be getting into the sponsorship business.
At the moment, Podshow is the biggest outfit in town when it comes to roping in sponsors. But its ritzy Madison Avenue glamour rubs many podcasters up the wrong way. I really do believe it’s going to have tough competition from the likes of Feedburner and Podcast.com.

Did you pick up on the LA Times review of podcast search tools Hugh? I found this bit interesting:
“A PodZinger search on the wine ‘Pinot Noir’ found the podcast series ‘Grape Radio’,” wrote Mr Colker.
“On the audio stream, the announcer talked about an area ‘too far north to grow vines, especially varieties like Riesling and Pinot Noir’. PodZinger translated it as ‘two foreign office two Croat specialty varieties like Riesling and Pinot Noir’.

Ha. I agree. Also, I’ve noticed one blogger I like, Cybersoc, using talkr to auralize his posts
http://www.cybersoc.com/2006/04/cybersoccom_ava.html
It works quite well, but it’s a bit creepy. However, I don’t think it really benefits anyone apart from the blind and maybe people who like listening to to robots in the gym or running along the Thames.
BTW - are you at We Media?

Fascinating. I just recorded a podcast and included this in it. It’ll be up in a few hours on my blog. Just wanted to let you know that you meant OPML not OPLM.
OPML stands for outline markup processing language. It’s what a traditional blogroll utilizes for display and that’s what’s so exciting about this idea. The fact you can take your podcast ‘roll’ and include it on your blog means you are pointing out great podcasts, that by virtue of their relevance to you, are relevant to your readers.
It’s been a struggle to do so know w/o having to manually update the podroll as your tastes changed or as podcasts disappeared. Now, as you unsubscribe the podcasts go away. This is really, really great!

[...] If you are interested in Podcast.com and its OPML technology for creating pod-rolls of favourite podcasts (see recent post on podcast.com), then I suggest you take a listen to the Sleepy Blogger Podcast, or at least cast your eye across the show notes by Robyn Tippins. She has a good explanation. [...]

[...] Mark Thomspon on the BBC Archive - “Can we let the public tag it, comment on it, recommend it?” I think he means the answer to be “yes.” The public must be able to configure the content he says, in the way each user wants. I’m pretty sure he’s talking about OPML - the term I first heard used last week by Kozzo, an x-BBC geek who left to set up podcast.com, which will have a highly configerable archive. l media wemedia [...]

I find it difficult to see how so many commentators are assessing the arrival of podcast.com’s complex and difficult to explain concept of “yet another directory with some added geek stuff” actually sizes up against Podshow - the two business models are entirely different and with online media advertising spend expected to grow 144.9% in 2006 (http://www.the-dma.org/cgi/dispnewsstand?article=4876) none of the players at this level have the potency to tread over the toes of the others in a significant way. I think all this Podcast.com vs Podshow nonsense I have read elsewhere is just publicity generating posturing. Though in their position, I might do the same thing!

The earliest allotment of call letters was made at the 1912 London International Radiotelegraphic Convention,] which provided that the call letters of stations in the international system must each be formed of a group of three letters, which shall be distinguishable from one another. The Convention made a partial allotment of call letters among nations that signed the Convention, and the International Bureau at Berne, with the consent of such nations, modified and added to this assignment of call letters by circular of 23 April 1913.

I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.
Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:
http://tinyurl.com/38sojf
This is where you’re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.
Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit - I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.

Good day
It’s a interesting video I made to show off the Dervish’s dance from the guildwars Nightfall party.
The dance the Dervish does is the same one that Christoper Walken did in the clip for Fatboy Slims’ - Weapon of choice music video (hence the music used)
What do you think about it?
