Again I did this for ID3 Magazine, so you will hear their ident and signature tune at the start.

It is fifteen minutes long. Some of the things which he says are quite significant, I believe.

He speculates that on demand radio may one day equal or outstrip live broadcasting – and that is bound to change the way the BBC makes programmes.

The Ricky Gervais Podcast shows that in the future talent might bypass the traditional broadcasters. He says this is a significant challenge to the BBC, and then later he ponders whether Ricky Gervais is the exception not the rule.

He lets slip that podcasting might cause the BBC to rethink its traditional policy on what listeners find offensive (taste and decency) – especially given that Ricky Gervais has exceeded the normal boundaries.

He doesn’t seem to approve of those who charge for podcasts: “I don’t want to see a search for money undermine what’s an incredibly exciting development.”

He thinks the BBC should help independent podcasters, and even hints that one day it might provide training for them.

Apologies to subscribers to the Blog Relations Podcast who might be a little confused by the ID3 Magazine signature tune. I would have done the interview in exactly the same way for the Blog Relations podcast – but ID3 gives me some journalistic credentials and better access to interviewees. I also think ID3 is going to be a great magazine and will help make podcasting more mainstream, so I’m keen to help them.

Great Podcast Interview With The BBC…

Hugh Fraser does a great job with a fascinating interview on podcasting with Simon Nelson, head of interactive at the BBC. Simon clearly has a deep understanding of the impact of podcasting on broadcasters and gives a very impressive insight…

  2. [...] Catching up on two weeks of unlistened to podcasts I particularly enjoyed Hugh Fraser’s chat with Simon Nelson, head of interactive radio at the BBC. Given the BBC has been experimenting with podcasting since late 2004 it was interesting to hear Hughs thoughts on where podcasting is headed. In light of the recent publication of the House of Lords report and the Governments response as part and parcel of the current BBC Charter Review it was particularly insightful. Runtime is 15 minutes. Recommended listening.   [...]
