After my attempt to explain what Ajax is, while at the same time admitting that I didn’t really know, I’m glad to see from the comments at Cred8 (Ajax v Ajax) that there others who admit to being in more or less the same boat.

I feel on more certain grounds when I say, in reply to Rachel’s post, that there’s no chance of legal action by the owners of Ajax the loo cleaner. Ajax the computer language isn’t a business, so it’s not usurping a trade name, let alone passing itself off as a cleaner. (By the way, I’m no more a lawyer than I am a programmer, but I think I’m probably not far wrong this time). The name has been around for a while (see the Iliad of Homer circa 800 BC).

Rachel gives a rather interesting example of the current Ajax in action. It’s live search on Google.

    The example I usually give people is Google Maps at http://maps.google.com/ The way the map allows you to navigate so quickly is all via AJAX.
