This is gossip. I was talking to an electrician who tells me he’s hoping to win the contract to wire up tens of thousands of garden sheds for IBM here in the UK. They won’t be spaces to keep the lawn mower, but cozy sheds for home-workers equipped with computers and broadband. IBM will save loads and loads of money in office costs.

It’s no coincidence that IBM is very big into employee blogging. The more dispersed the workforce becomes, the more important it is to make sure that everybody stays in touch with everyone else. Blogging is taking the place of chats in the canteen and the corridors.

And if IBM’s home-workers get fed up with sitting in their sheds all day, they can always turn them into works of art.
