Podcast PR Influence

If you are interested in podcasting and how it can be used as a business communications tool, and if you have a spare hour ! – this is worth listening to.

Spinfluencer has a recording of  "The Bulldog Reporter’s PR Podcasting Panel"  held in San Francisco with leading figures from Podcast Alley (directory), Audioblog, The Rock and Roll Geek Show, and PR types.

The PR people are drooling over the potential for going "beyond the press release" and influencing what journalists write – even those who fail to turn up to an event – because they can listen to it at a time of their choosing.  Disney, General Motors, Purina, Cisco, Macromedia,  Virgin Atlantic, TV Guide, Jupiter Research, are all podcasting.

Purina – - the petfood company – repackages radio programmes about about cutting dog’s toenails and so forth.  Disney goes "behind the Magic Mountain."  Virgin Atlantic has destination reports.

One view expressed is  that you know that the fans of a product are going to subscribe to the podcast.  The important part is to reach further and find new listeners.  This means being creative.

The age of audio press releases is dawning.  If you send an audio comment to a podcaster, perhaps he/she will play it on the show.

They talk about "strategycasts" in which a business describes its thinking to potential investors and "jobcasts" for potential recruits.

On the technical side, a  podcast is defined as audio to which you can subscribe to using iTunes or another "podcatcher."  The speakers "Geek out" and talk about Id 3 tags which will help listeners see what your podcast is about on iTunes and organise your podcast on their iPod.

They also point out that the easiest way to enable a podcast feed, is to have a blog.  The blog software encloses the link to your audio file in the feed for you.  It’s dead easy.

This is awesome! I’m seeing a whole new realm of employment for myself in a few months when I graduate from school! With a journalism background and currently in PR and corporate communications at school, this is exciting stuff.
